Case Study: Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group for
Country Inns & Suites

NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL LOCATIONS

Meeting room seating must be, first and foremost, comfortable. However, good design is a must and convenience of use is critical within the 470-hotel network of the Country Inns & Suites by Carlson.

The Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group redesigned the hotel’s meeting room chair for use in an aggressive new build, acquisition and conversion program in the U.S., Canada, India and Mexico. When Minneapolis-based Elness Swenson Graham (ESG) Architects was asked to bring these designs to life, they called upon MTS Seating for collaboration.

“MTS is a Carlson Rezidor preferred vendor, but we had never worked on a customized product together,” explained Ann Fritz, ESG director of interiors and senior associate. The chair’s design originated with the company’s European team, and was built of wood with a low mesh back. In addition to looking for a more cost-effective product, the new chairs had to be stackable.

“We were looking for a clean profile and comfortable design,” Fritz said. “But because of the large numbers of chairs to be produced, they had to be cost effective and stackable. We thought that finding that combination would be difficult, but MTS was confident that they had the answer.”

Armed with the Carlson Rezidor concepts, MTS’ Josh Swy, along with the MTS product design and engineering team, worked on a design that met the Carlson Rezidor standards for style, performance, comfort and price. “Because we have research, development, engineering and manufacturing under one roof, we can respond to our customers’ requests quickly and efficiently,” said MTS Account Manager Jason Kurth. The team created a nesting chair, based on the Bolero design, that utilizes a COMFORTmesh™ back in place of the traditional upholstered back used on most banquet and meeting room stack chairs. “The chair was especially ideal in this application because it offers a mesh back that is quite close to the original design,” Kurth said.

More important, the prototypes were completed and delivered in time for a review with all of the Carlson Rezidor officials from Europe, where it was approved for production. The new design was unveiled in March at the
Carlson Rezidor World Conference.

“I have worked with MTS for a long time,” said Fritz. “They were extremely responsive on this project, and met all of our objectives.”
