As a child, there were several movies that greatly affected me. Of course, Star Wars blew me away as it did most anyone who saw it, but it was the movie Tron that started my fascination with computers. Over-simplified, the premise is that a programmer gets sucked into the virtual world of computing. I was not the only one to be fascinated with this concept, as through the years, I have consistently seen other concepts in literature and movies, and even products talking about virtual reality.
If you know me or have read the Pipeline, I am always talking about what can be, and eventually the technology will arrive that will make it possible. Well, the future of virtual reality is finally here with the invention of the Oculus Rift. I have been following its development for about two years, but it made headlines in March when Facebook announced its acquisition of Oculus Rift for $2 billion. It is AMAZING technology – I am including a link for you to check it out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1f_bAXHckUY
The possibilities are now endless! Aside from the opportunities in the entertainment industry, let’s focus on what it can do for us. How about the ability to do a virtual room review with a client without ever leaving your office or walking through a hotel lobby that hasn’t been built yet? How about the ability to experiment with ideas and see how they would work in an environment, while collaborating with someone on the other side of the world? The best idea of all, in my highly biased opinion, would be to create a virtual studio where you could craft a custom chair! The future is coming, and it is not as far off as we may think!
